Welcome to the 5th Meeting of ASMRM, held for the first time in China! Also jointly with Chinese-Mit’2008 Welcome Message from President of ASMRM  from our Chinese delegates that the 5th ASMRM Meeting be organized in Tianjin in 2008. Since the establishment of ASMRM in February 2003, the society has organized four international conferences in Seoul, Taipei, Tokyo, and Seoul, respectively. With a strong commitment of Professor Zhang Yong and members of the organizing committee together with the generous support from local agencies and Tianjin municipal government of China this meeting has been well organized to take place here in Tianjin, China. One of the major aims of our society is to promote academic exchanges and research collaboration between biomedical researchers and clinicians who are interested in mitochondrial research and medicine in countries in Asia and Pacific Rim region. We believe that the rapid progress in recent years in basic research and clinical medicine of the roles that mitochondria play in human health, disease, aging, cancer and exercise have justified the great need for international conferences focused on mitochondria. Scientists in Asian and Pacific countries have been making more and more significant contributions in mitochondrial basic research and medicine in the past two decades. Many of our Chinese colleagues are among those who have made such contributions. In the past one and a half years, Professors Zhang Yong, Chen Quan and Guan Mingxin as well as Professors Liu Shusen and Xu jianxin have successfully invited many eminent scientists in the world to engage in this meeting. As a result of their tireless effort, we have been able to assemble a very strong scientific program for this meeting. On behalf of the society, I would like to express my sincere appreciation of all the invited speakers, especially those who have traveled from afar, to share with us your recent work and experience in this fast growing field of mitochondrial medicine. With an aim to facilitate exchanges of research ideas and technical expertise, we have several poster sessions for participants to have thorough discussions with the authors on the work they presented in the posters. I hope that your participation at this conference will prove to be a valuable and rewarding experience. I am sure that the lectures, posters and discussions presented at this conference will help us better understand the recent progress in mitochondrial research and medicine and acquire new ideas and state-of-the-art techniques to enrich your research and boost your scientific careers. I would like to invite all of you and your colleagues to engage in not only scientific programs but also various cultural and social activities organized by our host in this meeting. This conference titled “Mitochondrial 2008: From Bioenergetics to Cell Biology and Medicine” will cover diverse fast-developing research fields in the modern mitochondrial research，including following sessions: bioenergetics and metabolism, ROS and signaling, mitochondrial movement and dynamics, mitochondria and sports medicine, mitochondrial physiopathology and pharmacology, mitochondria and health: aging, diseases and cell death as well as mtDNA mutations and evolution. Taking such importance into account，the organizing and scientific committee has tried its best to provide an opportunity for face to face communication among mitochondrial scientists from international community and share current information on progress in mitochondrial basic research and medicine．The local organizing committee has also deliberately arranged several tour routes．It is highly desirable that all of these efforts will provide you and your family an opportunity to feel the charming of Chinese ancient culture and the natural scenery as well as the industrious people for the modernization of their motherland and the friendly link between Chinese scientists and all colleagues from Asian region and the world．Your acceptance of this invitation will be appreciated indeed． Tianjin, an international seaport city of north China, is very near by ~120 km east south to Beijing. Being as one of the four municipalities of China, Tianjin is also an economic center for north China not only due to its historical and modern development in Chinese culture, but also as National Economic Development Area of China-Binhai New Area. Besides,Tianjin is also a venue for Beijing Olympic Games 2008.
